More Than a Game: Coaching with Kingdom Purpose Through Unwavering Faith

How God’s Faithfulness Transformed Career-Ending Setbacks into a Journey of Faith and Business Success

When doctors told Manny he would never play basketball again and might need a can for the rest of his life, unwavering faith became the cornerstone of his journey of faith. This testimony of faith shows how trusting God in hard times can lead to the discovery of kingdom purpose. Manny’s story showcases God’s faithfulness through community of faith support, the power of seeking God’s guidance, and what it means when faith is tested beyond human limits.

If you’re facing impossible circumstances, Manny’s story shows that God healed what doctors declared hopeless and drawing close to God is exactly where breakthrough happens.

Growing Up in Philadelphia: When Basketball Becomes Your Outlet

Finding Identity Through Sport

Manny grew up in Philadelphia, a place known for its tough environment. Without a consistent father figure, he turned to basketball as his outlet. His passion for the sport was fueled by watching local hero Allen Iverson and celebrity Cristiano Ronaldo. Little did he know, his biological father was a professional athlete, embedding the athletic spirit in his genes. But it would take more than genetics to navigate what was ahead. It would require faith in God.

High School Dreams: Trusting God While Training at Elite Levels

When Hard Work Meets Divine Favor

In high school, Manny worked tirelessly on his game, even training with an NBA-level coach named Bruce. His hard work paid off when he received a full academic scholarship to LaSalle University. God’s purpose seemed clear, and path seemed straight. But faith is tested not when things go right, but when things are falling apart.

Scripture teaches: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…” (Proverbs 3:5) - a truth Manny was about to learn in the deepest way possible.

The Devastating Diagnosis: Trusting God in Hard Times

When Doctors Declare It’s Over

Just as Manny was about to walk onto the LaSalle University basketball team, he discovered he had eight microfractures in his leg. The diagnosis was devastating but the prognosis was worse:

  • He would never play basketball again

  • He might need a cane for the rest of his life

The Crisis Response: Dropping Out or Leaning In?

Devastated, Manny dropped out of college after just two weeks. But instead of giving up, he leaned heavily on his faith in a way he never had before.

Trusting God in crisis became more than a religious cliche-it become his survival strategy. Manny had a decision to make:

  • Believe the medical diagnosis and accept limitation

  • Believe in God and trust he was healed

“Despite the bleak medical diagnosis, he believed God had healed him and continued to play basketball. “

Scripture declares: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1). Manny’s decision was radical faith.

When Faith Is Tested Again: The Vision Crisis

A Second Devastating Blow

Manny's faith is tested further when he discovered he had cataracts in both eyes, worsening his vision. He was about to spend his entire savings on contacts that would accelerate his blindness. This is the reality of trusting God in adversity.

The Turning Point: Seek God’s Guidance

When a Mentor Points You to Prayer

In a pivotal moment, Manny met Mr. Shell, who advised him to seek God's guidance. It was an invitation to trust that God’s plan for your life is bigger than the crisis. Manny was learning faith through adversity isn’t about having all the answers - rather know Who does.

God Healed: When Vision Is Restored to 20/20

This changed everything. With faith through prayer and his community of faith, Manny's friend and his church community raised the money for his eye surgery, restoring his vision to 20/20.

Healed by faith isn’t metaphorical language in Manny’s story, it’s his reality. His testimony of faith contained tangible, verifiable evidence of God’s faithfulness.

Manny became a living example of this truth: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,” (Psalm 103:2-3)

From Setback to Success: Oral Roberts University and Beyond

Trusting God’s Will for Education

Despite many setbacks, Manny enrolled at Oral Roberts University and graduated in 2020. His degree and testimony was proof that God’s plan for your life includes restoration of what the enemy tried to steal.

Manny’s faith journey embodies this truth, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Trusting God in Adversity

  • Unwavering faith means you believe in God’s power above medical limitations. Manny’s response when he was faced with the microfactures and cataracts diagnoses was to lean heavily on faith.

Jesus taught in Matthew 19:26 “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

  • Manny’s faith was tested multiples times. Trusting God in hard times requires recognizing that testing isn’t punishment but refinement.

James 1:2-4 says, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

Peter adds: “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1: 6-7).”
