Trusting God Requires A Sacrifice

A conversation between Adam Kennedy, guest; and Devaughn Williamson, host.

Not having life go the way we plan can sometimes be the best thing that can happen. Adam Kennedy’s story is all about trusting God with your life. His story is filled with faith, perseverance, and trust in God when stepping into the unknown to follow the call God has placed on his life.

When Adam first felt the call to be a counselor, he was just 21 years old. He wasn't even in school at that time. After getting saved around this time, Adam decided to fully surrender his life and start trusting God. Fast forward to today, he is running a successful private practice alongside pursuing his doctorate degree. However, the road was not an easy one.

For years, Adam juggled the responsibility of working two jobs. He would often find himself working his full time job during the day and growing his counseling practice in the evenings and weekends. Exhausting is one word he would use to describe it, but he kept going with faith and trust in God that one day his private practice would be his full-time job. He kept waiting for the right time, but God had a different plan.

The right time came unexpectedly. Adam felt a strong sense that he needed to take that step of faith and leave the comfort of his full-time job and dedicate himself to his practice. It was a terrifying decision, but one he ultimately obeyed. Adam understood that trusting God with his life would mean stepping out in faith. When he did, he experienced the peace, provision and growth that came with obeying God.

Through his life, Adam noticed a pattern that God opens doors when we obey his voice. Years before, Adam received a prophetic word that he would one day earn his doctorate and teach at a university level. When he heard it, it seemed like a far-fetched idea, but when the opportunity presented itself for Adam to enroll in his doctoral program he immediately remembered the prophetic word he received. Once again, he saw God open a door in a way he never saw coming which included financial support that covered his education.

To give you context of this miracle, Adam had been out of school for years. But this doctoral program was tailor made for people working full-time in the field and contributing to its advancement. This was proof that God was setting the stage long before Adama even considered applying.

Now that Adam got accepted, he just had one issue - fiances. He had not applied for any scholarships or financial aid. Suddenly, Adam recalls getting an email that said his financial aid had been approved. Turns out, it was a $21,000 scholarship he never applied for. That moment was yet another reminder that God is faithful to provide for his children that follow his Spirit.

The key to all the prosperity and miracles happening in Adam’s life was his willing and obedient heart. The breakthrough didn't come until he surrendered and followed God’s lead.

Adam would encourage others to trust God because He has a bigger picture in mind that you have yet to realize. God opens doors we can’t see now. If He asks us to step out, there has to be trust that He’s not leading us into failure. Sometimes what God may ask may not make logical sense, but it makes faith. Remember, God is always ahead of us. He just needs you to follow the path He’s laid out for you.

If Adam could give his younger self one piece of advice, he would emphasize the importance of being obedient in the small things. He reminds us that God just doesn’t operate in the big life-changing moments. He is present in our daily choices. If we love God, we will trust Him. If we trust Him, we will obey Him even if it doesn’t make sense. Because in the end, His plan is always bigger and better than ours.

If Adam’s story moved you, consider sharing it with someone who needs encouragement. And I encourage you to partner with Faith Ignite to help bring more stories of hope to the world. Together, we can spread messages of God's faithfulness to those who need it most.
